How do you turn on Nook's 3G? 2 Years ago Karma: 0
Does 3G come on automatically? Or do I have to do it manually? (Do I have to turn off the wifi?) I ask because I have DISH satellite wifi and it fritzes out during storms. Earlier tonight I got a message the Nook could not connect while during a title search. I have never seen an ATT Edge or any other logo indicating it was on. I do see the wifi symbol when I'm wifi'd. Thanks for your help!

There is another symbol next to the wifi. The 3G is always on unless you are in airplane mode but you won't see any icons unless you are browsing the "Shop". For a test turn off wifi (wifi icon) then try to use the shop and see what happens.

When I first got my nook, I was unable to register it. I could connect via wi-fi, but not 3G/EDGE at all. Technical support was finally able to get it registered via wi-fi, but I had no other method to browse the store, and I had never seen the "4 bars" icon at the top of the screen. I ended up having to do the "hold the power button for 20 seconds 10 times" in order to force an OS reload on the device. Once it came back up, the wireless worked fine. If you have never seen the "4 bars" icon, and you know you are in an area with coverage, you might have the same problem.

I have an older Nook. Got it in Feb 2010. I have the updated software (1.4.0)but wonder if I have the G3. I have only connected via my WiFi. How can I tell if I have the G3?

You can simply turn off airplane mode and make sure wifi is off also.
Then choose update B&N library and you should see little left-to-right radiating symbol (eventually) at top of eInk screen indicating connection activity.
If your area does not offer AT&T 3G connectivity, your nook will work over EDGE (just a bit slower is all). If you are out of range of any GSM towers, you'll have to go back to wifi for your access.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but it showed up on Google and answered my question, so I just wanted to drop in and make 100% sure...

The instructions for engaging 3G (posted above) are for the Nook Color, right? Not the very first one? And is the 3G free? No AT&T contracts or anything?


I was thisclose to getting a 3G Kindle (live out in the middle of no where and don't have satellite internet) when a friend told me about the Nook's...."special properties". So now I'm very eager to get one...as long as I can get 3G for a reasonable price. (Or free)
