Hi! I bought a nook about a month ago (SN 10029x, WiFi-only, shipped with 1.4) and I'm having a whole slew of buggy problems. I'm hoping to find out if they are common issues or if my nook is defective.

The most irritating problem I have is my books won't open! 9 out of 10 books will sit with "Opening your Book" regardless if I have opened them before or if they're new. It will sit like that indefinitely until I manually return to my library and open the book again.

Another issue I have is the screen display (e ink) won't display the correct content. For example, it will display my wallpaper even though the touchpad indicates I'm in my library. Or it will display my library when I have a book open (the touchpad changes as if I had a book open, too). This happens infrequently but it's still frustrating.

My touchpad varies in sensitivity to an absurd degree. I have been using it for a month now, long enough to become familiar with it, but sometimes it won't swipe. It won't light up when I press the home button (up to 5-6 times). Sometimes it will activate a menu item even though the screen was dark when it should have simply woken up.

The worst case of the touchpad is when the main menu suddenly became the games submenu. Chess would open the Bookstore. After I restarted it functionality resumed as expected.

If the nook is charging, anything that utilizes the wifi radio will cease the charging and I have to unplug and replug the nook. This includes shopping, using the browser or simply deactivating airplane mode.

Probably a dozen times now the nook will randomly shut off. I'm positive I didn't bump the power button, since every time it happened I was holding the nook with one hand at the bottom. There is no consistency when it turns off - using the browser, reading, shopping or adding a bookmark.

Lastly, the page turning seems sporadically laggy. Most of the time it will turn a page in 2 seconds or so, but occasionally it will appear unresponsive for up to 7 seconds at which point I either swipe or use the hard buttons again and 2-3 pages will suddenly flip by.

Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any tips or tricks to fix this. I'm beyond the return period or I would simply return it and buy a Kindle. I really want to like the nook but it has been performing so poorly for me I can't believe I paid money for it.

Call B&N and have them exchange your nook for a new one.
Definitely sounds like your current one is sick and needs to be put down.

It's clearly defective. The nook has a one year warranty. They will ship you a brand new one. If you want to switch to Kindle just ebay it. I think you'd be happy with the new one.
