formatting PDFs for reading on Nook 3 Years, 5 Months ago Karma: 0
Hello,

I have a number of articles on PDF which are not legible on the Nook because of the way it reformats the text. The articles on the page consists of 3 columns of paragraph. What happens is that the reformatting concatenates the paragraphs, so you get sentences that make no sense.

Does anyone know if the reformatting can be "directed" on how to handle the data? Is there a work around for this?
Attached is an example.....

Thank you
Jorge

You are seeing PDF reflow, which is the device trying to make your PDF readable, worked great eh?

With smaller screens you either reflow the content or display it full screen and let the user zoom in as needed. The nook doesn't support a zoom yet, but hopefully will at some point.

I think for now you are "out of luck"

Thanks for the response. I did some research last night, and came across two free apps to manage e-books: Calibre and Sigil. Calibre converts formats, while Sigil is an EPUB editor.
What I'm experimenting with is converting my PDFs to EPUB and then using the editor to convert the article to a "single" column article. Tedious as all hell, but I wanted to give it a go. I think the zooming capability is a must, and I do hope the Nook will support it in the future.

Thanks,
Jorge

Jorge,

Very interesting... Very tedious for sure.

Really this zoom ability is what MADE the iPhone browser so revolutionary. It let people view entire web pages on their phone correctly and let the user zoom in/out as needed.

I don't understand why companies that specialize in presentation don't get how some people use PDF.

Zoom a must! Use the color screen for gestures to move around the page, that would be awesome!

I'm also hoping there will be a zoom feature added in the not-too-distant future! I used Calibre to change a PDF book (actually the shop manual for my motorcycle ) to epub, but it's useless right now mostly because of the diagrams. The converter doesn't remember where to put them! I was hoping to be able to take my Nook out to the garage (in a zip-lock bag) to work on my bike instead of having to guess which pages I needed and printing them out from my PC.<sigh>

I'll be anxiously looking forward to this becoming a reality!

Mobipocket Creator (Publisher Edition, Home does not seem to handle PDFs) has proved helpful in converting PDFs to PRC format. I have then fed those files to Calibre to convert to ePub with high levels of success.
