Just got a Nook Color & ready to try some SD ROMs 5 Years, 11 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi!

I've been thinking for a while of getting a Nook Color to play around with. A co-worker recently brought one in, and I took a look at it. He replaced the OS with Phiremod, and I was very pleased by how peppy and responsive it was. I don't have much tablet experience with my only real frame of reference for Android performance being my DROID Bionic phone. I'm very happy with the Bionic's performance, particularly in transitions from one app to another, screen animation, and overall look and feel. His Nook Color with Phiremod appeared to perform comparably, or comparably enough that I decided to purchase one. I won an Ebay auction, so I should be receiving my reasonably-priced, shiny used Nook Color in a few days.

In the mean time, I have been reading up on various upgrade options, I see several "boot from SD card" options and many "write to EMMC" options. Initially, I'd prefer to "test drive" via SD card, but ultimately I have no problem with re-flashing the ROM. I did the same with my Bionic within the first couple weeks of purchase, so the general process is not foreign to me.

So does anyone have any suggestions as to the best resources for instructions on how to create a "boot from SD card" SD card?

Thanks!!!

I received my Nook Color, and tried to use a couple SD-based alternate ROMs, and I had marginal success.

While the installation process overall was actually quite painless, the pain ended up being in the SD card itself.

First rule of Nook Color SD booting: USE THE RIGHT SD CARD!

I have several MicroSD cards of different sizes, but they are all Kingston brand. During and after install, I was getting constant Force Close errors. It was impressive to see a viable alternate OS on the NC, but it was horribly slow, and the FC errors were just WAY too frequent. Definitely heed the suggestions by others to use known "good" SD cards such as SanDisk or PNY.

So what to do next?

I decide to just bite the bullet and install the latest nightly of CM9 (2120126 version.) Yes, I'm living on the bleeding edge, but so far, it's simply AMAZING!

CM9 is ICE on a Nook Color! How freakin' cool is that?!?

Market access is quick and easy. The UI is beautiful and smooth. Overall, I'm very pleased.

In fairness, the NC is obviously not a high-end platform, but CM9 is very, VERY usable.
