Just in case you were under a rock and missed this today1

Appeared on slashdot, and etc.

Very interesting approach. I'd agree with the rest of the comments about "did they want to make it easy?" I wondered about the speed of the memory card and if that could play into the speed problems of the device.

It really is a bit surprising that the OS was on a common SD card hidden within the guts of the device.

Android phones (like my G1/HTC Dream) have all this stuff in a flashable ROM. Getting access that way usually involves finding a hole in the system - I believe it's the Bluetooth system on the phones.

SD(HC) cards now go up to Class 10 (10 MByte/S transfer), which is quite fast. However, while that may boost the speed of booting the device or loading books stored on the card, it may not increase the speed of the e-ink screen. Sure, it'll move the data from the card to the device a bit faster, but the e-ink refresh is what it is.

The bad thing is that I've heard the e-ink dev kit costs about $3K, so... ...
