Non-rotating screen when reading ebooks?? 1 Year, 11 Months ago Karma: 0
I've recently been looking at a Nook that was updated to v1.2 and comparing it to some other ereaders. The Nook works well, except that I cannot understand why, when you're reading an ePub book, you cannot rotate the screen to landscape mode and have the book/text rotate so you can keep reading. As far as I can find the only way to read an ePub book on the Nook using the built-in reader app is in portrait mode.

There are plenty of Android apps for reading ebooks, and virtually every one of them takes advantage of the screen rotation function, allowing you to read in either portrait or landscape mode, no problem. So what in heaven's name motivated B&N to release a version (based on Adobe's digital reader presumably) that locks reading to portrait mode. In particular, a problem that you will eventually come across is a picture or illustration in an ePub book that's in landscape mode and would easily fill up the screen if you could simply rotate it (like you can in the browser and practically everything else).
Currently, only a portrait mode illustration can possibly be made to show as a full screen image on the color Nook, i.e. as large as possible. If you happen to have one in landscape mode you're SOL since the ePub will -not- rotate on the screen. That's lame when plenty of other apps easily do it. Why B&N would release a reader that won't do it is almost inconceivable to me--and I have to sell these things at work every day.

(Fwiw, why also -no- option to tap on or press the image to enlarge it as you can on an iPad or with another Android reader app..but that's another story.)

Agreed, makes no sense whatsoever. I'll try it out on my galaxy tab, I'm pretty sure the nook app rotates on that device.

Same thought here Mark but seems on droid no rotation - iDevices can rotate. Odd, maybe just plain silly!
