Nook Simple Touch Keeps Freezing and Won't Unlock 2 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 0
I just got a new Nook Simple Touch for Xmas. Worked fine initially but now I have trouble unlocking the device. I try to slide the lock and nothing happens. Call support but ended up having to go to the store last week. When I got there though it was working again. They did a full system restore.

Now again last night the Simple Touch would not unlock again. Went back to the store again today. This time they guy tells me to turn off the Nook (power off) at least once per day.

Has anyone experienced any issues with not being able to Wake up the Nook from sleep mode?

Nonsense. You should not need to power it off daily unless something is wrong with it. I haven't used my simple touch a ton since last OS update but NEVER had this happen. I would go back to the store and ask for an exchange. No device should require you to restart it daily and if it does it's not worth your attention. The people in the store are only somewhat useful at times.

I also purchased my Simple Touch in December and last week I also started experencing problems unlocking it. Tonight, it has frozen completely. Now...not only can I not unlock it, I also cannot power it off.

I have been turning off the nook every day now and no long have had an issue since then but I agree that this doesn't make sense.

I gathered this and wrote it to another poster having similar issues...

I found a few interesting posts about the Simple Touch...

"I've been having this issue intermittently and may have fixed it.

I cleaned the screen with a Q-Tip around the edges and the problem seems to have gone away. Just a simple dry Q-tip and I ran along the edge of the screen a few times.

Maybe that's all it was? My Nook has been good for two days now."

"According to the tech sources I've been reading, the NST screen touches are detected by IR sensors placed in the frame above the screen, so this would make perfect sense if anything had built up to block them. I'd just be careful of using anything that might push the cruft further into the frame. Maybe a pass with a very soft paintbrush to flick dust away from the frame first."

"PROBLEM SOLVED: I had the the same problem, and was embarrassed by the simple solution when I called tech support. I needed to CLEAN MY SCREEN with a micrfiber cleaning cloth. I guess invisible finger grease in the location of the unlock slide made the screen unreposnsive. After wiping the area with the cloth, the unlock feature immediately began working."

"This sounds exactly like the "dirty screen" issue. I'd left my NST unused for 10 days and had the same sort of symptoms. I'd press the 'n' button to wake it, but it wouldn't respond to the finger swipe. Then I remembered: This thing uses sensors in the gap between the case and screen, so is sensitive to dust. I blew out the gap around the screen, gave it a wipe with a microfiber cloth, and lo and behold, it was fine.

"The key is to clear out that gap as well as clean the screen. Just shoving dust into the gap if you use a normal cloth (or your shirt) probably won't fix it, and can make it worse. Give it a blow along each edge (ideally with an air cannister) and try again."
