Layout on a PDF doesn't always translate nicely to conversion utilities trying to "reflow" the content along the lines of a smaller device. Interested in hearing your results but I'd be very surprised if you can get a scientific textbook to be readable on a nook.

Hey, I can't believe that I didn't get this sooner. I love to read but I was hesitant to get an eBook. When I went to Iraq last year, I shipped over fifty books with me (that's how much I love books) and got more while I was there for the year. A friend of my suggested getting an eBook reader but I didn't think that I would like it more then paperbacks. I also didn't want to get a kindle because it constrained me to one website. I am soooo wrong. I love this Nook and I can download so many books that I have to place a budget. Not to mention, I don't have to carry books around (I go through about 3 books a week unless I am not working). This thing is totally awesome. I can also download college stuff to help me do research papers wherever there is wifi. Wow. That is all I can say at this point.

The charge you get on a computer is different than when plugged in. Some mobile phones won't actually charge after the batteries go dead until you use the plug that goes into the wall (like some of the older HTC phones). That was probably it. It's the same cord right, just different power source?

Exactly - see this post on PDB. It's really a container for content more than a book "format". Using PDB files the nook can't handle could be the problem.

I went to system settings and clicked the switch for nook application that said, "sign out next launch". Then after re-logging in and sync all was back. Odd. Glad this version syncs everything. I even had to re-download books.

I made a cover for the princely sum of $3. I couldn't see spending $30 or more! I saw the DIY cover posting in this forum, but it's for the old box the nook came in. The new packaging is just cardboard and foam, no nice acrylic clip.

I was in a dollar store (Dollar General I think) and saw diaries with fake leather covers for $3, which are exactly the right size and shape for the nook. Here are the steps involved:

1. Carefully cut out the pages with a Stanley knife. They're held in only by the thicker first & last pages which are glued to the cover, so it takes just 2 cuts. Be careful not to cut through the cover!

2. take the foam out of the box the nook came in, and carefully peel the foam "frame" away from the foam backing.

3. Glue the foam frame into the inside of the back cover of the eviscerated diary.

That's it! I use a rubber band to keep it closed.

Hello all! It's my first post as I'm new to the world of nook. I love to read though and it has proven to be a wonderful device for me. My other love is table top RPGs and Roleplaying. I recently downloaded a pdf of the D&D 3.5 character sheet and annotated it so that my character info was on it. I then transferred it to my nook. It looks great (sortof) but I have a few problems that I have been searching the internet to answer but have had no luck.

1.) The text is too small in some areas. Since the nook does not support zooming, what are my options? Is there a better way to format the PDF that still retains the tables and charts without destroying the character sheet itself?

2.) What are my options for annotating within the nook? When I take damage, I'd like to be able to record this on the nook, but so far this appears impossible. Thanks for all your help guys! It looks like you have a great community here.

CodeSamurai

P.S. I've attached the PDF of the character sheet for anyone who wants to see what this is all about.

If you softroot your nook you can. Be Aware this likely (READ DOES) void's your warranty, so if you haven't done it yet, think carefully before you make that descision. You would also need to check the warning on the nookdev's site first, because there's been a hardware change in the newer nooks & attempting to hack those bricks them.

However, if you already have a softrooted nook, one way to create "bookshelves" is to create files , titled however you want & sideload them onto your external sd card. pull up trook & there'll be a my books folder, open that & go to the external sdcard link,& there are your bookshelves.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I did try that. Actually the reason I installed the media player was that ever since I started using my external sd card to store ebooks, I've been having some problems with the official B&N programming. Specificly, the my documents folder & the audio player don't always(or ever) recognize any content, whether its stored on the external sd card or on the internal sd card. I've had no problems with the softroot from nookdevs, & everything shows up there just fine, but I miss my music, so I thought I'd try the nookdevs nookmedia played & I can't figure out how music is supposed to be stored so it'll be recognized.

unfortunately the nook ignores the folder structure. The library app really isn't set to help you organize your books (odd for an ereader eh?)

If you use the nookdevs software for your nook they have a great book tool that is much nicer and puts all your books (B&N or not) in one view.

No touch screen lit
(that was the real problem no way to control the nook)
after a time out period.. Main screen showed screen saver but there was no way to control the nook so there it sat... I I tried to wake it up... Black screen again.....

So I Turned the nook OFF.

Powered it back up while I held down that (left-Arrow) < (Right side pageback)
Button. NOOK-Devs' current root re-installed from the SDHC card and
"God Bless America!" everything came back on. I think it was the fault of the Wi_Fi being left on overnight while the charger was connected to the nook. Either something came in on the wifi or a data bit was lost somewhere in the OS....somehow. Hope this helps.
R,

The new Harry Bosch book is out soon and my goal is to read the remaining Bosch stories by then. Void Moon has been somewhat of a disappointment so far, but only about a 1/3 of the way through. I know, I know VM isn't a Harry continuation, but Cassie Black appears in a later story, so I figure I should know her story.

Hi! Are you sure that the book that you put in your documents was in epub format?
If not you should download calibre and convert the book in epub format.
Hope will help you.
good luck!

Subject: re assigning buttons for next/previous page - by: Neal Winters

Wow ! If I read that right it looks like I have to be a programmer/developer to get into that file and change those button values around.... I think that is beyond my capabilities......When I plugged in my nook to my computer (Vista) it asked for a ADB Driver.... to install but I can't find out how to get the driver (where can I download it?) then I assume I could use the instructions for remapping key 524 and 525. I wish it was simpler since I hate the button arrangement as it stands from B&N.

This is why we all bought nooks! Every once in a while we have trouble but a far better ereader experience than I've had on my other devices. Even their iphone app is suck-ish.

are you using 3g or wifi?

The daily is a grab bag anyway but the nook covers part would stink. How many books? Are you sure the ones you have provide covers?
