Troubleshooting Help - Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) with nook or nookColor


Everyone loves to troubleshoot device and software problems while trying to do simple things ... like read a book, right? Could Adobe Digital Editions be the tool nook and nookColor owners love to hate?

First, if you are just getting started with the nook or nookColor we have a video tutorial to cover the basics. There are a few things if you don't do right can cause problems later. The video covers tool installation, setup, and copying books.

If you are only purchasing B&N content or downloading books that are NOT copy protected don't waste your time with this silly tool, you don't need it!  This tool is used for downloading copy protected content from online eBook retailers and many local libraries.  If you are looking for a good eBook management tool for your computer this is not the one, checkout Calibre instead.

The rest of this article will cover troubleshooting ADE when it doesn't work correctly.

Device Missing or Error Messages?

Nook not showing up in ADE? Getting errors like "User not activated"?  

We'd suggest the following steps to "reset" the software:
  • Connect the nook and click on the Nook drive (Finder or Explorer)
  • Find and delete the .adobe-digital-editions file ... NOTE: If you can't find this file on the nook it could be because your computer is setup to hide system files. To show system files read how for Mac OSX and Windows
  • Restart ADE, Your nook should be visible

If your nook is still not visible ... take these additional steps

  • Connect the nook and click on the Nook drive (Finder or Explorer)
  • Find the “Digital Editions” folder and delete it
  • Restart ADE
  • nook should no be visible
The last step once the nook is showing up is to click "Authorize Device".  See our video tutorial for copying files to the nook if you need more help.

Error Messages when plugging in nook and missing book covers?

, nothing is wrong with your eBooks from B&N. While B&N uses Adobe technology their books aren't compatible with ADE (ironic eh?).  Thankfully most versions of epub files are compatible with your Nook.

Can't open your Book Download?

Well first you should know you won't be downloading the book itself, you'll download a link to the book.
 That might sound confusing but let's keep it simple.  When you download from Kobo or your public library your browser should give you the option to open or save.  The easiest thing to do is to open the download file. As a matter of fact if you are given the option to always open this type with this program, choose YES or CHECK the box (depends on browser and OS). This will launch the Adobe tool and let you copy it to the nook (see tutorial video).  

If you don't get an option to open it that's ok.  Just go to your downloads directory and find the file.  It will end in .ascm - just double-click it!

I was recently giving a nook color by a friend. He factory reset the nook before he gave it to me. The reason he gave it to me is because he needed money to move to Texas. Anyway.I can't get the nook color to do anything pass the nook color by Barnes&Noble logo. The screen pops up to a page to watch a video on how to set up your nook but it won't allow me to do anything. It blinks from the set up screen to the logo screen. Does absolutely nothing else. I tried on several different occasions to factory and hard reset it today. Im getting nowhere fast and its driving me crazy cause I really want to explore the nook. Something new to me. Can someone message me or call me and try to help me out? Thanks soooo much.

When I open the file for my library book, ADE say that it is unable to download, "error getting license." What does this mean and how do I fix it?

This fix- which is the one I also found elsewhere online- did nothing for me. The solution I found is so easy

You will have already downloaded ADE onto your computer, authorized it and set yourself up with an ADE ID. You also will have the book in question in your ADE library on your computer.

1) Open up "Computer" on your PC
2)Locate "My Nook" in your directory on the left side of the explorer. Click on "My Nook". "Internal Storage" should open up below.
3)Further up on the left side, click on Libraries, then Documents. On the right, hopefully, you will see a folder in your documents directory labeled "My Digital Editions". Open that, locate your book/document, click on it with your left mouse and drag it down to the "Internal Storage" line below "My Nook." You have just copied the book to your Nook. Open up your Nook and locate the document in your Nook's library. When you open it, you will be prompted to verify your ADE ID info!

There is no ADE file on my NOOK HD. I have it set to show all files in Finder, my ADE is authorized, and it still doesn't show up. I've been trying this for a few weeks now, and I'm about ready to return my NOOK before the return period is over. My NOOK is getting on my nerves now, especially because the B&N free versions of the ebooks I already have are absolutely terrible.

I used your instructions to get ADE when I first bought my Nook-very helpful! Now My husband "dumped" the computer and I am having ftouble re installing the ADE It will not let me authorize it. It recognizes that the email and password are already used. How can I resolve this?

My nook color won't shut off and the slide menu button to unlock it won't work. Was playing a game and went to shut it off and the whole thing just locked up. We have only had it 2 weeks. What can I do, none of the menus come up at all.
